  UK: Channel 4 - Cutting Edge The End is Nigh broadcast around late 1997

  any of you in the uk remember watching a cutting edge documentary on jehovahs witnesses, entitled, "the end is nigh?".

  it would have aired around late 1997.. it was about the lives of two couples, one a fitness instructor's courtship with a brother who was a programmer, and the other about a sister who left the truth and came back, eventually getting baptized.. the congregation involved was the abingdon congregation, located in oxford.

  Yeah, I vaguely remember that programme. I thought at the time that we (JW's) looked like lunatics in the documentary. The couple highlighted were an odd match too weren't they? He was a weedy geek and she was a slim, nice looking lass who had more about her.

  The scene I can recall best was when they were sat in the car outside his house on a date or something. The explanation was they couldn't be in the house together without a chaperone cos of adulterous thoughts.

  It's strange that we were preaching trying to get people to join the JW's but whenever they were shown on TV I felt embarassed to be part of it.

  April 1st Question From Readers Justifies "Bribery" and "Tipping"At Times!

  i don't have the magazine but i read it at my mother's yesterday.

  the gist of the article is that some christian's consciences might allow them to give a "gift" or payment to an official to speed up some paperwork or get them to look at something that they might otherwise ignore because they weren't "tipped"!

  .......i wonder if this has anything to do with the dumbo thing going on in brooklyn (crooklyn).....

  Maybe they're trying to justify the controversial advice given to some South American congs that they could 'bribe' officials to gain official documentation. Apparently in those countries up to 2 years national service is legally required to be considered a full citizen and gain a passport, stamped voting card etc. so the advice was to break the law.

  i think that many brits do, although it's far more common in london.

  Cheers for clarifying that. Wouldn't want her family sueing me for libel for calling her a psychic instead of a strip artist.

  i stumbled on this site by accident and i'm kind of glad i did.

  in the past i have typically avoided these sites because most people on them seem newly bitter and i didn't like the tone.

  i was raised a witness by an alcoholic father and an abusive stepmother.

  Yeah this bird flu thing is pretty scary. It's been getting a lot of news coverage in the UK. What worries me is the scientists agree that even if this particular bird flu epidemic doesn't spread one will in the near future and you can't stop it.

  Jehovah's Witness Oddities

  i now enjoy telling people about the things jehovah's witnesses can and cannot do.

  for instance, witnesses can work in a store that sells lottery tickets and tobacco but they can't own the store themselves.....whole blood is forbidden to be transfused yet blood fractions are acceptable.

  donating blood in any form is wrong but accepting blood fractions is a conscience matter.........can you think of other jw oddities????

  Lottery tickets are gambling, winning a prize in a promotional draw is not.

  Yeah, I always thought about that one too. I also could never see the difference between gambling on horse races etc and investing on the stock exchange. On both occasions you study the form and take a calculated guess at the outcome but in the end it's a gamble.

  visited fossil rim wildlife preserve and also to dinosaur valley state park...here's some pics and if any of you haven't visited it is a nice day trip from dallas.

  Oh yeah I forgot a couple like bread for money and cobblers for nonsense. A lot of those are bone fide cockney rhyming slang but many are modern additions. I once had to do an essay on poetry in high school so I did it on rhyming slang just to be awkward. The most reasonable idea for where it originated was among criminals in London in the 1800's who used it to pass information to each other so their plans wouldn't be rumbled or overheard. I'm not sure why it entered into the english vocabulary in such a big way, maybe cos it's such a convoluted way to describe things and we like stuff like that in the UK.
